In order to understand “the history of the world through another’s eyes” and to introduce students to the different perspectives the world’s peoples have on events, juniors and seniors enroll in one of the following additional history courses, Islamic History, African History, East Asian History, Latin American History, or American Social History. These courses encourage empathy and understanding as students study historical patterns of human development and learn to appreciate the impact each generation has on the present and the future.

Each year, students audition and perform in 2 productions. These performances integrate the talents of our dance, theatre, and music students, as well as any student interested in performing. The Rigor With Redemption policy at Saint Mary’s allows students to retest when an original score is below a C. In order to retest, students meet several times with their teacher and complete supporting work. This review of course material not only helps to raise a student’s grade, but, more importantly, ensures that a student understands the material and can apply it.

In order for students to prepare for the college admission exams, Saint Mary’s employs The College Board’s suite of standardized exams using a test-retest protocol. Our students take practice versions of the SATs their freshmen and sophomore year and the PSAT in October of their junior year before they take the SATs in April. This allows the school and students to measure individual student academic growth. It also doubles the opportunity to practice taking the college entrance exam in a no-stakes environment.

School does not end when the final bell rings at Saint Mary’s. After the 5h period of the day, teachers are available during Academic Block to support students and their academic needs. Students can meet with teachers, retest, catch up on missing assignments, work on projects with their classmates, and complete their homework.

Upon enrollment, all freshmen are placed in English 1-2. Placement in English Honors is based on a student’s 8th grade English academic report, a positive recommendation from the student’s current English teacher, and the student’s English HSPT test score. The program culminates with The Senior Project, in which students pursue individual research on a topic of personal interest and are expected to demonstrate and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in a real-world context to their peers and to the larger community.

All students are assigned to a counselor who will accompany them during their entire four years at Saint Mary’s. Freshmen can be placed into Honors Algebra based on their successful completion of a high school algebra course taken in 8th grade, a review of their HSPT math scores, and a positive math recommendation from their grade school math teacher. An optional math placement exam in the Spring can also be used to place freshmen into Geometry or a higher math class.

The Shea Center serves as the cafeteria, with a brand new kitchen that was renovated in 2020. Students also enjoy hanging out on the comfy couches or playing ping pong as the Shea Center serves as the perfect spot for student life to thrive.

Incoming freshmen students with extensive experience in Spanish or French who wish to accelerate into a higher-level course may do so by taking the language placement exam in early May at Saint Mary’s. They will then be placed in the language level recommended by the World Language Department faculty, based on the range of their experience reading, writing, speaking and listening and their ability to communicate correctly in these various modalities.
Acquiring proficiency in a foreign language promotes respect for, understanding of, and participation in our multicultural society, even as it opens up new ways of thinking and processing information. It is our hope that each student may experience the fulfillment that comes with communicating in another language as they add these new dimensions to their understanding of the world.
